[122] Reminder through Old age
Old age, with its myriad of limitations and challenges, can indeed act as a profound reminder of the transient nature of life. Many spiritual traditions use the awareness of mortality as a means to cultivate mindfulness and presence. Recognizing the impermanent nature of life can help one prioritize what truly matters, be it relationships, inner peace, or acts of kindness.
Death, often deemed taboo in many societies, is a natural part of life. By avoiding or denying its existence, we perhaps deny ourselves the opportunity to live fully. By confronting and embracing the inevitability of death, we can lead a life with greater purpose and intentionality.
[123] Why not extend the same kindness throughout our lives?
The Dalai Lama's quote beautifully encapsulates the essence of interdependence and the inherent value of kindness. If we start and end our lives depending on the compassion of others, it stands to reason that our middle years should be filled with the same spirit of benevolence. Instead of getting caught in the hustle and bustle, and often the indifference of mid-life, let's remember the kindness we once received and will one day need again, and make it a consistent theme throughout our journey.
